Beyond the noise, a small set of AI skills makes a measurable difference to office work. These are the ones worth learning first.
Generative AI is most valuable where work is repetitive, text-heavy or needs a first draft. It is least valuable where accuracy is non-negotiable and cannot be verified quickly.
Skills worth building first
- Writing a clear brief: context, constraints, audience, output format.
- Iterating on an output instead of accepting the first response.
- Summarising long documents and then checking the summary against the source.
- Using AI to explain unfamiliar formulas, code or processes.
- Documenting a manual process so it can be handed over or automated.
Judgement matters more than tools
The professionals who benefit most are the ones who know what a correct answer looks like in their domain. That is why we teach AI alongside Excel and analytics rather than as a separate novelty subject.
Data responsibility
Follow your organisation's policy on what may be shared with external tools. Anonymise data where possible, and prefer approved enterprise tools for anything client-related.
